What is the Ku-Band?

Ku-band is a part of the electromagnetic spectrum that ranges from 12 to 18 GHz. It is used for satellite communications and broadcasting, including direct-to-home (DTH) television services, VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) networks, and other data transmission applications.

Ku-band offers higher bandwidth and better data transfer rates than other satellite communication frequencies, making it a popular choice for transmitting high-quality video and audio content. It also allows the use of smaller satellite dishes, making it a more cost-effective solution for satellite communications.

However, Ku-band signals are more susceptible to atmospheric interference such as raindrops, which can cause temporary interference in the transmission of signals. To overcome this, many satellite communication systems use advanced error correction techniques and signal processing algorithms to ensure reliable communication.

Offset Dish focal point calculator

Calculating the focal point of an offset dish requires knowledge of the dish’s dimensions and the angle of offset. Here are the steps to calculate the focal point of an offset dish:

  1. Measure the diameter of the dish. Let’s say it’s 1 meter.
  2. Measure the depth of the dish, from the centre to the edge of the dish. Let’s say it’s 0.5 meters.
  3. Measure the offset angle of the dish. This is the angle between the axis of the dish and the feedhorn. Let’s say it’s 24 degrees.
  4. Use the following formula to calculate the focal point distance (F) from the centre of the dish:

F = (D/2)^2 / (16 x (tan(O/2))^2 + (D/4))

where: D = diameter of the dish O = offset angle in radians (O = offset angle x pi / 180)

Plugging in our example values, we get:

O = 24 x pi / 180 = 0.4189 radians

F = (1/2)^2 / (16 x (tan(0.4189/2))^2 + (1/4)) = 0.333 meters or 333 millimeters

Therefore, the focal point of the offset dish is 333 millimetres from the centre of the dish. This is the distance from where the feedhorn should be placed to ensure proper signal reception.
